One of the many activities I enjoy is teaching at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Dr. Jerome (Jerry) Byrne is the person that I have had the honor of teaching with during most of my trips to the Academy. Jerry and I both teach in the Academy’s Arson Programs.

On the left is J.T. Hodges, an instructor for the National Fire Academy Arson Programs. On the right is Doug Williams, Arson Programs Training Specialist.

This is Ken Kuntz, Fire Studies Specialist, assigned to the National Fire Programs Division of the U.S. Fire Administration. Ken has run the Major Fire Programs for the USFA for many years. Aside from being an expert in Major Fire Studies, he is a wealth of information in many subject areas (none of which I will go into).

I have met some great people during my time in Emmitsburg. Maxine Cool has been the “House Mom” for many of us over the years at the Academy.

“What does one do during the evening hours in Emmitsburg?” you may ask. Generally, a trip to the world famous “Ott House Pub” is in order. This is Bobby Ott, one of the owners of this fine establishment.

I started coming to the Ott House in 1982, during my first trip to the Academy as a student. Most evenings you can find Larry Glass in (or out of) the kitchen at the restaurant. Larry is also a long-time member of the Vigilant Hose Company in Emmitsburg.

Suzie Glass, Larry’s wife and Bobby’s sister is another one of the owners. The entire Ott family has made many visiting firefighters (including myself) not only feel welcome, but a part of the Emmitsburg community.

The “Command Post Pub” is the on-campus watering hole. The amount of nation-wide fire service networking that goes on in this place will make your head spin (or maybe it was that last beer). Lois Delp is a familiar face to many of us who make the trek to the foremost fire training facility in the United States.
