Structure Fire – 12/17/13 – Durango, CO

On December 17th, 2013 at approximately 17:30 hours, the Durango Fire District (DFD) was dispatched to a report of a house on fire at 15723 US Highway 550 (South). As DFD Battalion Chief Randy Black arrived on scene, he reported that he had a working fire on Division 2 of a large two-story residence. Due to the long and narrow driveway leading to the home, Black also requested that Engine One drop a large diameter hose line to the fire and that the water supply operation be established at the highway. Engine One laid out all 1000 feet of its 5” supply line as water tenders began setting up. An aggressive interior attack resulted in the fire being knocked down shortly after arrival.

An extensive overhaul operation took place in order to assure that the fire had not extended beyond the area of origin. Due to the massive size and configuration of the home, extension ladders were set up in the interior to assure that firefighters could open up ceilings above the entry foyer. These efforts resulted in the extinguishment of the fire that had extended to a few areas. One person, who was at the home at the time of the fire, was transported to Mercy Medical Center by DFD Paramedics. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the DFD Fire Marshal’s Office.
