MYSTERY SOLVED! I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Newark Fire Department Battalion Chief Joe Ryan (BC1 – Tour 1 – Retired) for the following information. This fire occurred on October 11th, 1989 at 15:36 hours. The incident went to a Second Alarm and the fire gutted a vacant, one story 40 X 150 brick church at 135-37 16th Avenue at South 9th Street. Box 4314 was struck for this fire and Tour 3 worked the incident. Joe Ryan was the Captain of 11 Engine at the time, Battalion Chief Rich Meeker and Deputy Chief Ed Dunn can be seen in the photos. Firefighter Kevin Killeen also makes an appearance. Thank you Joe for passing the information along!
